Crown Reduction in Altrincham: Smaller Tree, Same Healthy Canopy

Altrincham Tree Surgeons arranges crown reduction across Altrincham, Sale, Timperley and the rest of Trafford, carried out by NPTC-qualified, fully insured tree surgery teams.

A crown reduction reduces the overall height and spread of a tree by shortening its branches back to suitable growth points. Done properly it keeps the tree's natural shape, reduces the load on its limbs and gives you light and space back, without the need to fell it.

It is the usual answer when a mature tree is shading a house, pressing on a roof or leaning over a neighbour's garden. It is not topping, which leaves ugly stubs and invites decay. Our teams make small, clean cuts to lateral branches, usually taking a modest percentage of the crown rather than hacking back to the main stems. Big beeches, limes and oaks in the gardens of Bowdon, Hale and Timperley are the trees we reduce most often, usually because they have grown over a house or a neighbour's garden.

Done Properly: Why It Matters

Good crown reduction follows the recommendations of British Standard 3998. Cuts are made back to a side branch of suitable size, branch ends are shortened evenly, and the tree is left with a balanced outline. We tell you honestly if a tree has already been badly cut or is a poor candidate for reduction.

Because every species responds differently, we also advise on how often the work needs repeating. Many trees need reducing again every five to ten years, while others, such as some beech or old oaks, are better left with lighter work.

Recent Job: A Very Large Weeping Willow Cut Back and Shaped

Rather than removing this very large willow, the team climbed into the crown and cut it back all round, bringing the tree down in size while keeping its natural weeping shape.

Large overgrown weeping willow in a back garden
Before: the willow at full size
Tree surgeon climbing in the crown of a weeping willow
During: working from a climbing line in the crown
Weeping willow after a crown reduction, smaller and reshaped
After: reduced and reshaped

“Excellent service by Seb. A very large willow tree cut back and shaped. Really pleased with the results!”

★★★★★
Seb and his team successfully reduced the height of a very large pear tree for me. Probably not the easiest job due to its position but they did a great job and the tree was reduced in a very balanced way. It looks great! Great communication and very very tidy – no debris left at all.

We had three beech trees reaching the roof line, now we have much more light at the front of our properties. … We had the team back to reduce all the epicormic growth on an enormous ash at the back of our property, absolutely fantastic job.

Seb and his assistant arrived in a timely manner to carry out a reduction and trim to a conifer tree that was overgrown and partly overhanging a garage roof. Although access was difficult … the work was still carried out carefully and thoughtfully and we now have a good looking conifer tree. The garden was left clean and tidy with all waste removed.

Crown Reduction: Common Questions

How much will a crown reduction take off?

Usually a modest part of the crown. We agree the target height and spread with you before we start. Removing too much in one go can harm a tree, so we are open about what is sensible.

Is a crown reduction the same as topping?

No. Topping cuts main stems to stubs and is harmful. A crown reduction shortens branches back to suitable growth points and keeps the tree's natural form.

Do I need consent to reduce a protected tree?

Yes. If a tree has a TPO you must have written consent from the council first, and trees in a conservation area normally need six weeks' notice. We can handle the paperwork with you.
